Who's Al ?

Dress up play is so important . Do you remember playing dress up when you were a small child ? Randy is 58 and still talks about the day he put on a cape and thought he really could fly.
There is so much to learn in the dress up room. Here is an excerpt from SMART START The Parents' Guide To Preschool Education by Marian Edelman Borden, Published by Facts On File.
Dramatic Play

The housekeeping/dress-up corner should be stocked with play items and props that encourage young children to play make-believe. Look for pots and pans, stuffed animals, dolls (soft, unbreakable, washable, and multiethnic), toy telephones, hats, purses and tote bags, unbreakable tea sets, doll beds and carriages.

What's Learned Playing make-believe lets a child bring the complicated grown-up world down to size. Research demonstrates that children who are active in pretend play are usually more joyful and cooperative, more willing to share and take turns, and have larger vocabularies than children who are less imaginative.

Imaginative play helps youngsters to concentrate, to be attentive, and to use self-control. Think about how a child develops a game of supermarket. He must first set up the counter, put out the pretend cans of food, invite friends to shop, use the "cash register," and bag the groceries. All of these actions help a child to learn about sequential acts. He also has a story or script in mind that helps him to perform each of these steps in a logical and orderly way.

When children pretend they also learn to be flexible, substituting objects for those they do not have. For example, a child will use an empty paper towel roll for a telescope.

Through imaginative play, children learn empathy for others. Children will often act out a whole range of emotions when playing pretend, offering sympathy for a stuffed "doggie" that is hurt or for a doll that fell off a chair. We watch them scold a puppet for being naughty or tell a doll how proud they are because she used the potty.

Dramatic play encourages children to think abstractly, which is an important prereading skill. Children come to understand that words represent ideas.

And... can I just say that I learn about the children's home life a lot in that room... :)

Some other things we did today!

In your child's cubby is a

n index print of your child's new friends. It is a great idea to talk about your child's day and include names. It tends to bridge the gap between home and school. Orrin is not on this index print. I had to do his picture seperate - sorry Orrin !

We took name plates with our names printed on them and made puzzles ! Please practice this at home and talk about the letters in your child's name.
We took pictures and made puzzles !

We had a visitor today from the Health Department. This is Sarah. She stops by from time to time to visit. Today she brought WIC and immunization pamphlets. ( Just between you and me - I think we are an excuse to get out of the office ! : ) ( pss... Sarah reads my blog too .)

And lastly, today I introduced Al to the kids. Last year we had Allie who helped me teach a social emotional curriculum to the kids. I think some of the lessons were pretty good so I am tackling a few at the beginning of the year so we can reap the benefits. Today we talked about being a friend. Watch for some important self control techniques coming up !

Monday Monday...

Here we are in our second week of preschool. Last week we learned so many things about how school " works". This week we can begin to focus on more things that make up our normal day - LIKE BOOKS! You probably don't know this but I have a resource room upstairs. It is a thorn in my side because I cannot keep it clean , but I LOVE my "STUFF". I have never counted my books but I have many , many.. many.... Today I brought out a lot of books about school and saying good-bye and friends. I wanted these last week but to be totally honest, I couldn't get to them yet. Sigh.... if anyone LOVES to organize and would like to volunteer to makeover my resource room - please raise your hand now !

Do you see the little bee in the bottom left corner of this picture? That is the helper bee. This bee moves down the cubbies. When it is your child's turn to be the helper, the bee will be on his cubby. Sometimes I need a little help ( getting an extra spoon or towel ) and sometimes I need more.

We had our first fire drill today. It was pretty successful.

This week we are talking about something that is familiar for the kids. Our unit is called I am unique. Today we talked about unique and what that means. Audrey told me " it means that everyone is different." We are noticing things like skin , eye and hair color . We started small groups today. From breakfast until 10:30 we have free play. On good days I invite four children over at a time. We do an activity together. It might be reading a book, or practicing our cutting skills, or doing a science experiment. Some kids are not ready yet for whole group instruction. To be totally honest - MOST kids at this age are not ready for whole group instruction. This way I can meet them for a very small time on their individual levels. We made this handprint picture today as a keepsake after reading a book.

Danny made me a bracelet. Thanks Danny !

We had our 16th friend start today. Cohen was in California the first week of school. He has had a good day. Audrey is Cohen's cousin and helped him through the day today.

Messes? We GOT'EM ! This is how we learn to use the glue properly. Not only that, we learn that making mistakes is ok, we just have to clean up after ourselves.

Did you know we pour our own water after we finish our milk ? Allowing your child to gain confidence by doing things like this also helps them be more confident in other areas of life, even emotional things - like letting go of mom and dad.

Muffin Tim Monday was a bust today. Last week I noticed some rust on the muffin tins . I thought I had enough to get by but we didnt . As of yesterday, they were put in storage for a yard sale. I am on the look out for plastic muffin tins. Not the new flexible ones... I think the ones I need are white and plastic. Anyone know where I can get them ?

We had a visitor come in from the Herald Leader today. She took pictures. I'm not sure what she took them of or why... we shall see.

Fabulous Friday Flicks !

We have made it to the end of our first week. It wasn't near as tough as some have been. If you have asked your child each day what we have done and they replied " play" . They are correct. Don't tell them but we already did a lot of other things as well !

How to use the art center *** 3 D Art **** The proper way to wash hands *** How to line up *** How to clean up **** What the loft is for and it's special rules *** Nap time routines *** Journaling **** Our first weekly reader ! ****Gate and Door Rules *** Made new friends*** How to let go of mom or dad in the morning and know they are coming back ****

We also sang, and read and counted.... a lot.

Friday is our day for cooking . We try to make sure that once a week we do a cooking activity. The kids were super excited today when I told them we would be cooking. The first group of kids made cornbread and the second group mixed honey and butter for a spread. We will taste it at snack time today. Cooking with kids is a great opportunity to count, estimate, use our fine motor skills and... learn patience. :)

Some things I FINALLY got finished this week I have been working on:
CUBBY TAGS~

The sign in sheet book came back from the printers !

I dont know who keeps leaving me these little notes each day, but it makes me smile. Thanks sweet person - whoever you are. Now.. if money starts showing up you will see me turn flips !

The fun never ends. We are still putting things away from the remodel. We need to have a HUGE yard sale. Tonight I have a webinar for Arkansas Better Chance from 6 -8. Perfect way to spend a Friday night, huh ? :) Next Thursday Randy and I are teaching a music workshop to providers in NWA ... so excited!

Other plans I have with YOUR KIDDOS next week are:

Have our first fire drill.
Start brushing our teeth.
Spend time talking about what goes on in the dress up room.
ALL ABOUT ME unit

I also HOPE to get the rest of your paperwork ready for you, schedule the dial three developmental assessments and then after that - our first parent /teacher conference to discuss how the assessments went and work with you to make a plan for the year.

So , here's what you've been waiting on - FABULOUS FRIDAY FLICKS! This is a song that is a favorite of many.

Such cute kids ! See you all on Monday!

Great Day

YIKES.... it is time to get the kids up and I have not gotten this blog up yet today! This will be a quick one !

Remember the work we have been doing at the art easel? Below is a three year olds art. At first all you will see is paint... kinda swirled on the page in most cases. They are experimenting with how to use their hands with the brush and even color mixing ( not really on purpose ). It is the process they are enjoying, not the product.

As they get a little older and develop more control , you actually see THINGS!

New art in the kids bathroom... I love it.

I love watching the little ones play alone. It is like the are in their own little world of make believe.

Journaling... this is how we get that practice holding a a crayon or pencil. Each day we take time to " write " in our journals. They are not told what to write or draw . Sometimes I might tell them a story and ask them to draw something from the story, but if they chose not to it is ok. We have writing experiences all over the room all day but sometimes children chose not to do them. With journaling , I know that atleast once a day they are being exposed to fine motor practice.

3D Art

Each day I feeling us getting in our routines a little more. I totally take back any conclusions I jumped to on our first day! :) Just kidding around... I know it takes everyone a while to get in the groove - including me ! Our day was almost normal today and I loved it. BUSY BUSY BUSY - but normal. If you go in a classroom of 3 and 4 year olds that is not buzzing with excitement , you might want to hang around for a while and see what is going on. A classroom that is child centered is usually not very quiet and slow paced. ( Especially with the number of children we have here ! ) A preschool classroom that is not child centered - in my humble opinion - is not age appropriate. :)

" Preschool children want to touch, taste, smell, hear, and test things for themselves. They are eager to learn. They learn by experiencing and by doing. Preschoolers learn from their play. They are busy developing skills, using language, and struggling to gain inner control."

Today I introduced more things in our art center. We looked at how to use recyclable things to build " stuff." The younger group decided to make a robot and that is what you see in the picture. We talked about how to get the " loose parts" to stick together. Would glue work or would we need tape? William said he wanted the mouth to be a rectangle ( great knowledge early in the game William! ) and we talked about how we could make the mouth a rectangle that would stick to the milk carton. And also, can we glue the paper towel tube on the box ? Will it stay?

This whole activity is about the PROCESS , not the product.
PROCESS ... not PRODUCT.

We had to think....
We had to talk...
We had to work together....
We had to make mistakes to figure it out....

Whew... Day 2

Day TWO! I won't say that day two was easier but it felt more routine. That is what we spend the first few days ( sometimes MANY days) of preschool doing - learning routines. You can't expect children to walk into a place they have never been and just instinctively know how it all works. I know, you are probably thinking - how hard is it to watch children play. Well... we learn HOW to wash our hands . ( Water, soap, rub until you make good bubbles , rinse and then dry ) and WHEN to wash our hands ( any time we walk in the door, after using the restroom, before and after eating, before and after using playdoh or other sensory materials , if we pick our nose... you get it. ) We wash a LOT ! We learn where our materials go. That teaches independence. It can be overwhelming and personally I don't want to spend my day just spouting RULES.. so we take a little at a time. Today, we added the paint easel. We learned step by step how to paint. There are little steps that make them more successful such as putting on a smock or wiping some of the paint off our brush before we start to paint. After today that center will be available all day - every day . Tomorrow we will learn 3 D art. So, all you recycle people out there, please bring a bag of boxes , cartons, etc... anything you can find that we can tape or glue together to learn how to make art that has height and depth. I love the new placement of our art easel by the sink !

Mom, look ! I am getting married! Malia is our new social butterfly. I like to call kiddos like her the walmart greeter. She greets everyone . Almost always it is with a hug - whether they want it or not. :)

More pictures from our fun day! We had no runners today and EVERYONE is sound asleep at nap. Ah....
