Mixed Up Monday

This week we are celebrating Dr. Suess birthday with " special stuff !"
Today was mixed up Monday ! We really had some mixed up wardrobes and hair-do's.

In celebration of
" The Foot Book" the girls got their toes pained. They loved it. We even made them a little mixed up. The boys walked by and I would say... do you want me to paint your nails? They would run and yell NO!!! :)

We sorted our shoes by strings or no strings. We sorted them as boots or not boots. We made patterns with the colors. Pink white pink white pink white. Black brown Black Brown...

Then we mixed them all up and had a race to get them on !

This is our new friend McKayla ! She has fit in very well today !

Muffin tin Monday!

It was a fun day. This morning before 7:45 I had made a trip to Fayetteville and back to help Addam with a car in the shop. I will miss you this afternoon. I have to pick him up at 1:45 and then have a meeting over there. Devin, Audrey's mom , will be helping Mr Randy from nap time on today.

Tomorrow is Top Hat Tuesday. Let your child wear a hat to school.

Friday Flick- Jungle style

Today was our last day on the jungle unit. We have had a lot of fun exploring animals that live in the jungle . Early this morning we read " Good Night Gorilla" and afterwards had a special visitor !

A GORILLA!!!

His teeth looked a little mean.. so I warned the children ahead of time that he was coming and not to be scared that he wouldnt hurt them. No one cried , ran or screamed. In less than a minute Randy took the head piece off so they could see that it was him !

We also made a favorite animals graph today - with our BODIES! I lined the animals up on the table and the kids lined up in front of their favorite jungle animal. Then we talked about terms like more, less, most and least.

We had our Friday dance party . I LOVE to see Orrin dance... he dances with every ounce of body he has.

William stopped by. He had his tonsils and adnoids removed on Wednesday. The kids were very curious and caring. They said " We miss you William."

We also read this book below today and talked about patterns.

It was another fun day. Enjoy our friday flick !

Ssssssnakes!

On days it is raining outside we add a little more gross motor play like this fun jungle toss.

Ever feel like there was a monkey on your back ?

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed.

We can practice our writing with fun cards that have words on them.

Roar like a lion ! Ok.. a sweet smiling lion...

Dillion is acting out the 5 monkeys song !

The boys are using their legs as drums to an african beat .

For other gross motor we played a game called " We Can Move."

Remember the plates we painted green yesterday ? Today we made snakes with them .

Audreys pretty picture .

We will finish the day with snake breadsticks and milk.... made by our short chefs !

More Wild Animals

We's had another fun day at preschool. Here is Orrin . We learned that an elephant sucks water up his nose and them puts it into his mouth. Practicing this with a turkey baster from one dish to another dish was fun !

One game we played was a file folder game called Lions Lollipops. Each of the children had pictures of various objects. If it started with the L sound they placed their pictures on the lollipop.

After reading the book " Caps for Sale" we painted paper plates green. Why ? It's top secret for a project we are doing tomorrow!
One of the kids favorite songs we are singing this weeks is " Im being eaten by a boa constrictor". Each day someone uses this laundry bag and acts out the song. Other songs we are singing are "Miss Mary Mack" , " We're Going on a Lion Hunt", and " Five Monkeys Jumping on the Bed."

Small groups was when we read the story " Caps for Sale." We used the BIG BOOK and I pointed to the words as I read. Another important thing to do when reading with your child is asking " what do you think will happen next?" and letting them turn the pages one by one. In circle time we used the " Caps for Sale" magnetic board pieces to retell the story. I allowed the children to tell me the story.

Other things we did today were listened to several different types of music. We were reminded of the story about the giraffe that we read yesterday. The cricket told him " Sometimes you just need a different type of music." We listened to snipits of classical, pop, country , blues , a lullaby and many more. The kids favorite of course was Justin Bieber.

I love it when I hear the kids playing and something automatically turns into a learning experience. At lunch today Daniel was talking to the other children and he turned around and noticed the thermometer hanging on the window. He asked me what it was. It turned into a group discussion on what a thermometer is, when it is hot does the red go up or down and why. Loved it... .

Hakuna Matada !

Everywhere you looked there were wild jungle animals today!

This game that Malia is playing is called " Hanging Monkeys." You roll the dice and add or take away monkeys as the dice calls for. You have to balance them . The green tree top is only held on by a magnet.

Andrea returned with her binoculars to look for more wild animals.

This is the "Elephant" game. They use the elephants nose to pick up ring on the floor.

The kids loved retelling the story/song of the five little monkeys today with my playset. Sometimes even I forget the awesome teaching aids that I have .

Randy and Andrea are talking. His face looks mad but he wasnt. She was telling him that he can speak spanish just like her grandma. We asked her what her grandmas name was and she said Andrea - just like hers ! Yesterday I went to a training on ESL ( English Second Language ) and how to teach children that come into our classroom speaking a language other than English. The speakers suggestion was to always speak in english to the child. I am not sure that I agree with that statement. Randy does speak a minimal amount of spanish and uses it to help the kids coming in feel comfortable and at home. I think him doing this starts a relationship with those children that even I can't bridge.

Jungle Sensory bin.... hidden animals everywhere. Another sensory activity was the playdoh.

We also played a math game today. I had pictures of monkeys with numbers on their chest. Each child chose two cards . They told us what they number was and then fed their monkey that many small bananas. What I found interesting was that many of them could not only count to the number but also use one on one correlation to feed the monkey the appropriate number of bananas. But... many of them did not recognize the written numbers. One way you can reinforce this at home parents is simply by pointing out numbers . They are everywhere. On your cell phone, on the tv remote, on menus..... Try it and play it as a game, the kids will catch on really fast.

During circle time we sang our jungle songs- including going on a bear hunt. We read an Eric Carle book called " From Head to Toe." The kids mimicked the movements of the animals . Today we also read " Giraffes Can't Dance." We found out they can. We heard that anyone can dance... sometimes they just need different music. After reading the book we went on a " listening walk" and listened for the music outside such as the wind whistling through the trees or birds singing.

Here is a link to the story if you would like to read it. Giraffes Cant Dance

We had a busy day- almost done - hang in there. Remember the books we have been reading about social issues such as picking your boogers or mouths the erupt like volcanos ? Today we read a new one called " Personal Space Camp" This book explored what our personal space is. How much of a comfort bubble do we really need ? The book suggest the size of a hula hoop but also points out that just like bubbles we blow, every ones bubble is different. This book, like all the others was excellent. I love Julia Cooks books!
